BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

 GERALD M. HAASE, M.D. is Clinical professor of Surgery at The University of Colorado School of Medicine and The Children’s Hospital, Denver. Dr. Haase has been actively involved in oncologic research and clinical trials for two decades including collaborations in the design of central venous access devices for the delivery of chemotherapy, applications for intraoperative radiation therapy in the treatment of pediatric solid tumors, evaluation of technical surgical innovations in adult and childhood cancer, and more recently, has assisted in the development of novel strategies for chemoprevention and nutritional oncology.

Dr. Haase received his undergraduate degree at the Johns Hopkins University. He received his M.D. degree from Tufts University School of Medicine and was awarded graduate honors in research. He obtained his surgical training at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver, and specialized in pediatric surgery and oncology with training at The Children’s Hospital Medical Center, Boston, and The Children’s Hospital, Columbus, Ohio. He holds Board certification and re-certification in General Surgery, Pediatric Surgery and Critical Care.

He served as Chairman of the Department of Pediatric Surgery at The Children’s Hospital, Denver, from 1980 to 1991, and was consultant pediatric surgeon to the Department of the Army at Fitzsimmons Medical Center. Dr. Haase was Chairman of the Cancer Committee of the American Pediatric Surgical Association and is Vice-Chairman of the Children’s Cancer Group, a cooperative research consortium of the National Cancer Institute. He was a member of the National Board of Directors of The American Cancer Society and is Chairman of its Task Force on Children and Cancer. He is also a member of the National Wilms Tumor Study Group.

He also serves as Chairman of the Board of Scientific Counselors of the Cancer Treatment Research Foundation and is senior member of the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Haase was appointed to the Board of Trustees of the National Childhood Cancer Foundation and currently serves on its Medical and Scientific Advisory Board. He has published more than 130 scientific papers and been the recipient of 19 clinical research grants. He has served as an editorial reviewer for numerous journals including The Journal of Pediatric Surgery, Cancer, and The American Journal of Diseases of Children and was a member of the editorial board of The Annals of Surgical Oncology.

Dr. Haase has participated in strategic leadership panels of the NCI and has been an examiner in pediatric surgery for the American Board of Surgery. He is a member of more than 25 professional societies including the American Association for Cancer Research, International College of Surgeons, American Academy of Pediatrics, New York Academy of Sciences, American College of Physician Executives, and is a charter member of the International Society of Pediatric Surgical Oncology. In addition, he participates on the American Cancer Society Medical Affairs Committee, Subcommittee on Youth and School Health Education and Advisory Group on Extramural Peer Reviewers.
